How Much Protein Should a Vegan Bodybuilder Consume?

Bodybuilding is not just a hobby, but a lifestyle. And one of the most important things the bodybuilders have to have in their diet is protein.

When we say protein, your mind must automatically jump to milk, eggs, and meat. But that is not the option for vegan bodybuilders. Luckily, there are protein powders available that are plant-based, which are perfect for vegan bodybuilders. And not just protein powders, there are plenty of foods that are rich in protein and suited for a vegan diet.

Protein and Vegan Bodybuilding – How Much Protein is Needed?

Naturally, bodybuilders need more protein than an average person. As they work out more and burn more calories, their need for protein is higher. But that does not mean that they can take as much protein as they wish.

No, protein intake should be balanced as too much protein consumption can cause you to have decreased athletic performance and other negative side effects.

For you to remain fit and successful as a bodybuilder, you need to have a balanced diet and the correct amount of protein in your system.

But how much protein should you take? Well, worry not because we will give you all the answers you need.

Amount of Protein

You must be wondering how much protein you should take. Well, there is no one answer to that question. It solely depends on a few things, including your lifestyle, weight, and goals.

According to the National Institute of Health, a person with a sedentary job needs to consume around 0.36 grams per pound of protein every day. But since bodybuilders have a more demanding lifestyle and are involved in intense workout sessions, they should consume 1.3 to 1.8 grams of protein per pound of lean body weight.

Why is Protein Important for Vegan Bodybuilders?

What is rule number one of being a bodybuilder? Building muscles and losing fat. Yes, bodybuilders may look buff but that is not fat, but muscles. And they work very hard to achieve their goals.

And proteins are necessary to build the muscles. Vegan bodybuilding is no different then bodybuilding as a carnivore, the same rules apply, “protein = gains”.

When to Take Protein – is There a Specific Time?

“Is it necessary that I take protein in the morning? Or can I take it any time of the day?”

We know that question must be bothering you. When you are a dedicated bodybuilder, every detail matters.

It is important that you take the required amount of protein the entire day, but is better to consume it both before and after your workout. Your muscle strength is increased when you take proteins post and pre-workout.

Now that you know how much protein you need for your diet, make sure that you don’t overdo it. You don’t want to diminish your performance by taking too much of it. Make sure you calculate the correct amount of protein intake according to your weight and exercise routine before you start. There are plenty of vegan options for protein available that will give you amazing results.
